Institute Introduction

Machine Intelligence Institute (MII) focuses on fundamental theories and key technologies of next-generation artificial intelligence. It conducts research in AI technologies centered around machine perception, cognition, and interaction, as well as foundational supporting technologies such as big data analytics. The institute aims to build intelligent agents capable of understanding complex physical and information environments, producing human-like multimodal expressions and creations, engaging in human-like interactive intellectual activities, and possessing reasoning and planning abilities with continuous evolutionary potential. Its research areas cover machine learning theory, big data analytics, computer vision, speech and natural language processing, large models and intelligent agents. MII also investigates critical applied technologies for various fields, including smart hardware interaction, AI for science, education, healthcare, multimedia content creation, and quantitative finance.

The institute boasts a team of high-level talents, including IEEE Fellows, recipients of national-level high-level talent programms or young talents programms. It undertakes national-level projects such as the National Key R&D Program and key NSFC projects. Hundreds of papers have been published at top-tier AI conferences and journals including NeurIPS, CVPR, and ICASSP etc. Achievements have been honored with multiple awards, such as the National Science and Technology Progress Award, Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and Wu Wen Jun AI Science and Technology Award.

MII has established close collaborations with internationally renowned universities, providing students with broad global perspectives and exchange platforms. It actively engages in industry-academia-research partnerships with enterprises, achieving remarkable results in technology transfer. Research outcomes have empowered tens of millions of smart vehicle cockpits and hundreds of millions of smart hardware devices, realizing groundbreaking breakthroughs in the international competitiveness of big data foundational software. The institute has jointly built model mechanism evaluation platforms with leading AI companies, partnered with top firms to establish talent training bases, and deeply participated in national and provincial research platforms such as the National AI Open Innovation Platform for Language Computing.
