On the evening of Oct 26, the annual award ceremony of Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) was held in Xi’an. Zheng Weilong, CS Phd graduate of 2018 won the 2019 Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award with his thesis Affective Brain-Computer Interactions.

Zheng Weilong was advised by Prof. Lu Bao-liang, director of the Key Laboratory of Shanghai Education Commission for Intelligent Interaction and Cognitive Engineering of the Department of Computer Science. During his doctoral studies, he published 14 papers (6 SCI journals) as the first author and applied for 2 patents. His paper on the IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development won the 2018 IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development Outstanding Paper Award. His paper on the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing was reported by MIT Technology Review with the title “How One Intelligent Machine Learned to Recognize Human Emotions”. The SJTU Emotion EEG Dataset developed by him is one of the two most commonly used EEG dataset based on emotion recognition, which has been applied by more than 700 universities and research institutions at home and abroad. Currently, Zheng Weilong's papers have been cited 1,049 times on Google Scholar. The H-index is 17, the i10- index is 23. One paper has been cited 214 times. Two of his first-author papers made it into the top 1% of ESI.
After obtaining the Phd degree, Zheng Weilong went on to do postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. His current research interests include affective computing, brain-computer interaction, and intelligent medicine.
Established in 1981, the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence is the only state-level association in the field of artificial intelligence in China. Since 2011, the association has been selecting excellent doctoral dissertations once a year, with no more than 10 selected each year. It is the most authoritative doctoral dissertation selection in the field of AI in China.
