On Nov 6,
the awards ceremony for the 2018 “Award Program for Excellent University Teachers
of Computer Science” was held in Peking University. Associate Prof. Deng Qianni
of our department won this award.
The award program was initiated
by John Hopcroft (Turing Award winner, winner of Chinese Government Friendship
Award, foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Gao Wen
(director of China Computer Federation, academician of Chinese Academy of
Engineering). Sponsored by enterprises and guided by the government, the
program makes evaluation on teaching and give awards to excellent teachers. It is
intended to promote the universities to attach more importance to undergraduate
classroom teaching and improve the relation between teaching and research. The
program is supported and instructed by the Ministry of Education and National
Natural Science Foundation.
Gao Wen introduced on the ceremony that during the first half of 2018, the
program was carried out in nine universities within China. Basic courses for
undergraduate students of computer science were selected for evaluation and
awards were given to teachers that demonstrated excellent classroon teaching. As
suggested by John Hopcroft, the evaluation is made on five factors including
the content of teaching, the interaction between students and teachers, teachers’
attention on students, students’ participation, and overall performace. 26
teachers among 106 were given the awards this year.
