Project 1 -- Admission Control in Cellular+WiFi+WiMax Systems

The objective of this project is to give an in depth experience with the call admission control procedure in wireless networks. By finishing this project, each student is expected to understand the principles and mechanims of how to provide quality of service to mobile users as well as how to tradeoff the design issues.

Platform

Since this is an NS2 simulation project, you can work on the project on your own computer, or use the server in our lab through remote login. If you do like to work remotely, please let me know, so I can create an account for you.

What to develop?

The Throughput Based Call Admission Control Scheme is already developed for you by the NS2. The Call Admission Control lies in the enter execs of the ADM CNTL in the RNC process model. In addition to this you will also need an external file called: umts - adm - cntl - support.ex.c. This file is an external support file that has many of the functions that the process model is calling. So, you will have to use these two files extensively: umts - adm - cntl - support.ex.c and umts - rnc - pr.c. In addition to this you might need some pipeline stages files, but that depends on how you are going to code. The coding process is really simple once you understand how it works. You will be coding the Wideband Power Based Admission Control Scheme in both the downlink and the uplink. Given below is the theory behind both the Admission Control Schemes.

Skills

To successfully complete this project you need to have:

  • Good understanding of admission control in UMTS
  • Successful experience with LAB1-UMTS
  • Good C programming skills.
Results to collect

Run both the admission control schemes for 3 Voice User pairs, 2 Video User pairs and 2 FTP users. You
can use your LAB1-UMTS for this and add the required number of users accordingly. Remember to "Save As" another pro ject before you proceed.
  • Make the following changes to the wireless profiles: Make all users start at a uniform(100,110). For the application time: Voice:uniform(3,5), Video:uniform(15,30) and FTP: End of Profile.
  • Make the following changes to the wireless applciations: Voice: Leave as Default except for Type of Service (TOS) as Interactive Voice. Make sure you use GSM Quality Voice as last homework. Video: change the Frame Interarrival time and Frame Size both to be Pareto(42.5,3). FTP: change the Frame Interarrival Time and Frame Size both to be Pareto(60,1.2). Both Video and FTP use Best Effort as their Type of Service.
  • Run both scenarios for 3600 seconds and compare the same results as last time. That is, FTP: Upload Response Time, Download Response Time, FTP Traffic Sent and Received in bytes/sec. Video: Packet end to end delay, delay variation, traffic sent and received in bytes/sec. Voice: same as video. In total you will see 12 graphs, 4 for each application. Make sure the comparison of two scenarios are overlaid and in 'time average'.
Hints

You will have two scenarios in your pro ject: Throughput Based and Wideband Power Based.
  • After making changes to one scenario, make sure you duplicate that scenario EVERYTIME you make a change because this needs to get reflected on the other scenario too.
  • The throughput based scenario has much of the code you can change and use in your wideband power based scheme. Make sure you utilize that especially in the uplink.
  • If you need to find your path loss in the downlink for the Wideband Power scenario, search for "path-loss" in the
