Released Time: 2019-04-24

The 2019 Microsoft Key Laboratory of Intelligent Computing and System Workshop on “AI 360°--System, Algorithm and Application” was successfully held at Liyang, Jiangsu from April 20 to 21. Professors from SJTU and researchers from The Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) had a heated and in-depth discussion on frontier issues in the field of AI.

Representatives from MSRA include: director of the joint lab, vice president of MSRA Dr. Zhang Dongmei, senior manager for academic cooperation Sun Lijun, and five researchers (Lou Jianguang, Lin Qingwei, Ding Rui, Cui Weiwei, Zhang Chen). Representatives from SJTU include: director of the joint lab Prof. Fu Yuxi, head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Prof. Zhang Liqing, deputy dean of SEIEE Prof. Zhu Yanmin, Prof. Guo Minyi, and five young faculty members (Sheng Bin, Jiang Li, Yan Junchi, Niu Li, Chen Yichao).

Fu Yuxi delivered a welcome speech. He said that academic research in universities should be in close cooperation with industry and constant study on applied technology is required so as to generate useful results. As a platform for industry-university-research cooperation, the joint lab has provided many cooperation opportunities for researchers from both sides for many years.

Dr. Zhang Dongmei said that the joint lab was set up in 2005 and has been in existence for 14 years. Since 2012, the two sides have jointly organized annual seminars, which have effectively promoted academic exchanges and scientific cooperation. MSRA has been actively contributing to the talent cultivation of the discipline of computer science at SJTU, accepting undergraduates for internships every year and establishing a joint doctoral program with Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which has achieved good results. In addition, MSRA has set up a fellowship award to encourage cooperation between the two sides. Currently, 12 outstanding young teachers in the CSE Department have received the funding. Through collaboration, the practical needs of industry can inspire researchers in academia, which is beneficial to scientific research and innovation.

Ten experts from MSRA and SJTU gave presentations on topics related to the field of AI, including machine learning, deep learning, cloud systems, and algorithms.
