Turing Award Winner Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao Met With CS Professors

On December 10, 2015, Prof. Andrew Chi-Chi Yao came to the campus of SJTU on invitation to attend the 69th Master Distinguished Lecture. In the morning, Prof. Yao, accompanied by Prof. Yang Shiqiang from Tsinghua University, visited our department and met with our teachers. Department head Prof. Guo Minyi, deputy head Prof. Zhang Liqing and a number of professors of our department attended the meeting.



During the meeting, Prof. Yao had an in-depth discussion with our teachers on education, research, talent introduction and other issues. Prof. Yao emphasized on the significance of stimulating students’ interest in research and guiding them to do original researches. He also pointed out that for researchers, quantitative accumulation leads to qualitative transformation. They have to enhance the comprehensive ability before undertaking challenging research projects. CS professors also discussed about problems in specific research fields with Prof. Yao.



Andrew Chi-Chih Yao is currently a Professor and the Dean of Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS) at Tsinghua University. He received the Turing Award in 2000. He is a member of U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, and a foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
